+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): A must read for anyone with an interest in CFD.
Having suffered through several cryptic books on fluid dynamics, I found this one quite refreshing, and student friendly. The author spends a great deal of time developing and giving the reader an appreciation for the complete Navier-Stokes equations. Then he carefully explains the mathematical behavior of various flows, giving the reader an understanding of well posedness for different flow regimes. The section on discretization and solution techniques focuses on the right and wrong way to obtain stable solutions. Finally, the applications provide complete step by step guidance that is very helpful to the novice in this field. In the preface the author speaks of the "joys of CFD", and by the final chapter, the reader can indeed share this view. I wish this book had been around 22 years ago when I was in college - it\'s suitable for students and professionals.

+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Sehr gutes Buch auch für den deutschsprachigen Raum!
Dieses Buch hat in meinem Studium des Maschinenbaus sehr gute Dienste erwiesen! Von der englischen Sprache sollte man sich hierbei nicht abschrecken lassen, denn das Verständnis fällt nicht schwer, wenn man sich einmal auf dieses Buch eingelassen hat: Die Sachverhalte sind sehr anschaulich erklärt und vermitteln einen schnellen und erleichterten Eindruck in die doch oftmals trockenen Materie. Auch ein Buch, dass man mal gerne nur aus Interesse aufschlagen möchte! Beigelegt ist auch eine CD-ROM mit zahlreichen Animationen und zusätzlichen Fotos. Auf jedenfall empfehlenswert!
++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): An excellent sophomore text
I purchased this book for a course in materials science. The course was structured as an independent study. I was responsible for studying the materials and I would take quizzes through e-mail. This book was my primary source of instruction for the course. Where the book could not support me in the quizzes, it was necessary to seek information elsewhere. My judgement of this book, therefore, is based on its thoroughness, mathematical rigorousness and its ability to explain concepts. Most of the topics covered in the course were well presented by the book. In particular, chapter 3, on the Structure of Crystalline Solids, was very well done. In general the writing style is good. The use of many figures and diagrams enhanced the explanations of physical phenomenon. I highly recommend it for an intuitive viewpoint into material science. Where the book falls down is in the realm of calculation. There are too few formula given. Where they are given, there are too few examples on their use. Chapter 6 on the Mechanical Properties of Metals, and chapter 9 on Phase Diagrams, are sections that failed in this regard. However, the books lack of over-reliance on formula and mathematics is a great enhancement for those just beginning an exploration of the science or a career in engineering. Too many numbers on a page would be a discouragement to those wishing to enjoy the material. Therefore, I would recommend this book as a sophomore level introduction to Material Science, for which, in fact, it has been written.

Dr. Callister does a nice job of covering all the essential topics in a basic materials science course for engineers. Well-written and entertaining, with a nice layout.

Dr Callister book shows his unprecedented skill in the art of teaching. The breadth, depth, and clarity with which he surveys materials science concepts will make this textbook indispensable for both studying and practicing engineers for years to come. Without a doubt, this is one of the most well written textbooks I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

This book is an excellent addition to the library. It\'s fascinating to read about all those great pioneers in mechanics, like Galileo,Prandtl,(he was also a great scientist in hydrodynamics and boundary layer theory) Boussinesq, Foppl and others. It\'s also interesting to know where the various assumptions we use today come from. (Transverse Shear deformation effects etc.,). The origin of beautiful concepts like Castigliano\'s theorem, minimum complementary energy theorem, betti maxwell reciprocity theorem etc are also given. Will make a very good reading for a weekend, if you are interested in mechanics of materials.

+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): A great reference for any model rocket enthusiast!
When I first read this book, I was merely a 15 year old begginer to the wonderful hobby of rocketry. After having sifted all the fundementals and vital information that made up this fascinating field, I found that what I intially thought to be simple was, indeed, the result of meticulas and crucial technical planning. Rocketry is fun, however the complexity and engineering of a rocket lies hidden. This book enveils that complexity and helps the reader comprehend it in a relatively easy manner. This is an extremely good aspect of the book because it spares the reader of the frequent hair-pulling frustration due to confusion. The preliminary chapters allow the reader to become more deaply familiar to the general aspects of the hobby. Things like basic model rocket components and construction as well as how to get started in order to eventually become deaply involved in the hobby are covered in these sections. You\'ll find that much of the information in this section is, most likely, stuff you may already be familiar with if you\'re a more experienced novice. The book then procedes to more detailed and more technical aspects of rocketry. From chapters 5 and on, more technical information is presented, however, in a format that makes understanding easy. Rocket motors, ingnition systems, stabilty, rocket aerodynamics and altitude determination are some of the many aspects covered. Another great feature of this book is that BASIC type computer programs that simulate and caculate crucial values and overall rocket performance can be found in the books\'s appendix already written. All you have to do is re-write the code in a BASIC computer program compiler and you\'re ready to make complex mathematical calculations for your rocket design in a matter of seconds. All in all, a great reference that any model rocket enthusiast will want to cherish forever. I also find that this book is great in terms of further inspiring young rocketeers, like myself, to persue a career in the field of rocketry and aerospace. It sure has for me! Thankyou Mr. Stine!

This Book Covers the History of Rockets to How to Build your own rocket and back. It is written in a super format and contains around 349 pages of knowladge of rockets and its cousins (Rocket Gliders.) Any body who knows nothing about rockets will be an expert by the end of the book and it is very helpful for even experts.

G. Harry Stine\'s handbook is the first book that any novice wishing to learn the fundamentals should pick up. Stine\'s magical ability to explain difficult ideas clearly and thoroughly is one of the things I loved about the book. The other reason, in my opinion why this book was so good is because it covers both breadth and depth about the sport of model rocketry. It did not just explain the basics and stop right there. Stine took it further by talking about the aerodynamics of rocketry, how to build large models, boost gliders, how to form clubs and oversee ranges, scale modeling.. and on and on...In fact, there are many tables in the book that even a veteran rocketeer would have to refer to almost daily to retrieve important information. WHAT AN AWESOME BOOK!

G. Harry Stine is considered one of the founding fathers of model rocketry by most rocketeers. This book, The Handbook of Model Rocketry is insightful, always interesting, often humorous, and remains as Harry\'s gift to our rocket community. Harry is no longer with us for he passed away recently but his legacy lives on in this terrific handbook. A "must read" book for all model rocketeers!
