++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Nicht mehr als Anhaltspunkte
Ich muss mich den anderen anschließen. Das Buch ist schlecht aufgebaut und undurchsichtig. Viel Wissen, welches man aber nicht haben kann wenn man sich so ein Buch kauft, wird vorrausgesetzt. Ich konnte es bis jetzt nur als Anhaltspunkt verwenden um dadurch bei Google meine Suche genauer definieren zu können. Deshalb die zwei Sterne. Es ist eine kleine Hilfe aber das Geld niemals wert.

Das Buch führt im Titel auch das Wort "Cookbook". Damit ist im Allgemeinen eine mehr oder weniger lose Sammlung von Code(Splittern) gemeint. Als Einführung habe ich mir das Buch von Aaron Hillegass gekauft. Die bezieht sich zwar auf die Cocoa-Programmierung des Mac und nicht auf die des iPhones, die Programmierkonzepte sind aber nahezu identisch. Danach sind die Code-Beispiele aus diesem Buch gut verständlich. Zusätzlich kann man alle Code-Beispiele (als jeweils komplettes Projekt) von http://www.ericasadun.com runterladen. Weiterhin kann man dieses Buch auch als PDF-Datei kaufen (InformIT). Davon gibt es sogar schon ein Update. Allerdings ziehe ich es immer vor, ein Buch vor mir zu haben. Ein Medium-bedingten Nachteil hat das Buch: Wenn man sich das iPhone-SDK 2.2 runtergeladen hat, haben sich die Templates für die Projektvorlagen geändert (komplizierter), die Erica vorschlägt.

If Albert Einstein were alive, he would have a copy of The Road to Reality on his bookshelf. So would Isaac Newton. This may be the most complete mathematical explanation of the universe yet published, and Roger Penrose richly deserves the accolades he will receive for it. That said, let us be perfectly clear: this is not an easy book to read. The number of people in the world who can understand everything in it could probably take a taxi together to Penrose's next lecture. Still, math-friendly readers looking for a substantial and possibly even thrillingly difficult intellectual experience should pick up a copy (carefully--it's over a thousand pages long and weighs nearly 4 pounds) and start at the beginning, where Penrose sets out his purpose: to describe "the search for the underlying principles that govern the behavior of our universe." Beginning with the deceptively simple geometry of Pythagoras and the Greeks, Penrose guides readers through the fundamentals--the incontrovertible bricks that hold up the fanciful mathematical structures of later chapters. From such theoretical delights as complex-number calculus, Riemann surfaces, and Clifford bundles, the tour takes us quickly on to the nature of spacetime. The bulk of the book is then devoted to quantum physics, cosmological theories (including Penrose's favored ideas about string theory and universal inflation), and what we know about how the universe is held together. For physicists, mathematicians, and advanced students, The Road to Reality is an essential field guide to the universe. +++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Einfach wunderbar und einmalig!
Dieses Buch ist wirklich hervorragend, es setzt allerdings erhebliche Kenntnisse in Mathematik und Physik voraus. Es gelingt Roger Penrose jedoch, vom "Einfachen" zum "Schweren" zu führen, um Leser und Leserin mit dem heutigen Stand des mathematisch-physikalischen Weltbildes vertraut zu machen. Seine einleuchtenden Erklärungen und didaktischen Vorgehensweisen suchen in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur ihresgleichen. Sein verständlicher Stil und fachlicher Umfang, wenngleich andere Themenschwerpunkte, erinnern mich an sein "The Emporer\'s New Mind" und an "Gravitation" von Misner, Thorne, Wheeler und "Gödel, Escher, Bach" von Hofstadter, ebenfalls herausragende Bücher. Als faszinierter Leser von Penroses früheren Weltbestsellern "Computerdenken" (1991) und "Schatten des Geistes" (1995) wartete ich auf sein neues Buch "The Road to Reality" (2005) mit gespannter Vorfreude. Nach der Lektüre des Buches kann ich nur sagen: ein Meilenstein wissenschaftlicher Literatur! Wohl selten ist eine Symbiose zwischen Lehrbuch und anspruchsvollster populärwissenschaftlicher Literatur so gut gelungen wie in diesem Falle. Der Untertitel "A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe" ist Programm. Penrose gelingt es in unnachahmlicher Weise den Leser in 34 Kapiteln auf über 1000 Seiten auf eine Reise durch die verschiedenen klassischen und modernen Errungenschaften der theoretischen Physik mitzunehmen. Eine weitere didaktische Meisterleistung ist hierbei die Fülle der außerordentlich instruktiven Diagramme, die die physikalisch-mathematischen Darstellungen in trefflicher Weise ergänzen und die Anschauung fördern. Wohl selten kam Goethes berühmtes Faust-Zitat so eindrucksvoll zum Tragen wie in diesem meisterhaft geschriebenen Buch: "Erkennest dann der Sterne Lauf, Und wenn Natur dich unterweist, Dann geht die Seelenkraft dir auf, Wie spricht ein Geist zum andern Geist!" +++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Wow!
Hatten Sie als mathematisch leidlich vorgebildeter interessierter Laie in den modernen Naturwissenschaften auch schon mal Fragen wie: Was sollen die komplexen Zahlen in der Quantentheorie? Was macht Einstein mit diesen Tensoren? Was hat es mit den Symmetriegruppen in der Teilchenpysik auf sich? Penrose macht sich die unglaubliche Arbeit, wirklich alle mathematischen Grundlagen zu erklären, und nicht einfach Begriffe hinzuknallen und dann kokett zu behaupten, das Buch setze mathematisch nicht voraus. Und auch inhaltlich diskutiert er unglaublich viel und breit: die Grundlagen moderner Physik, die wichtigsten Gebiete (Quantentheorie, Teilchenphysik, Relativitätstheorie, Kosmologie), die letzten Entwicklungen, die konkurrierenden Ansätze zur Quantengravitation. Und zwar nicht nur seine eigene Twistor-Theorie, sondern auch Stringtheorie und Loop-Quantengravitation. Ich werde wohl so zwei Jahre an diesem Werk zu arbeiten haben. Aber wenn es auch nur ansatzweise so gut ist, wie es bis jetzt aussieht, dann hat es das Zeug zu einem Klassiker. Ich dachte eine Zeit lang, die jüngeren Genies, speziell Brian Greene und Lee Smolin (auch unbedingt zu empfehlen: dessen neues Buch "The trouble with physics"), wären allen anderen davongezogen, aber Penrose holt mit diesem Gewaltschlag noch mal auf.

Penrose Bücher haben einen eigenen Charm. Wo in Deutschland eher fantasielos populärwissenschaftliche Bücher geschrieben werden, wenn überhaupt, da besetzt Penrose eine neue Kategorie. Wo andere Angst haben, überhaupt eine Formel mit ins Geschriebene hinüberzuretten, da schreibt Roger Penrose ein Buch von überwältigender Schönheit. Viele Zeichnungen in dem Buch sind aus seiner Hand. Das Buch hat nur zwei NMängel. Es ist zu kurz, und das erste Drittel dürfte für die Leserschaft, die sich mit Vektorräumen und Bündelhomomorphismen e.t.c. auskennen ein wenig zu ausführlich sein.

Das Buch von Penrose ist genial. Deutlich besser als "Computerdenken", da es m.E. einen roten Faden besser erkennen läßt und die zugrundeliegende und nötige Mathematik besser entwickelt. In meiner Rangliste steht es hinsichtlich Originalität auf einer Stufe mit "Gödel, Escher, Bach". Penrose braucht 16 Kapitel, um die notwendige Mathematik auf "seine Art" zu erklären. Dies geschieht sehr, sehr anschaulich aber streng und tief. Er macht auch nicht bei der Schulmathematik halt, sondern versorgt den Leser mit der höheren Mathematik, die bis ins 4. Semester eines Physikdiplomstudienganges reicht. Hierbei täuscht sich auch Penrose, denn der Stoff ist ohne entsprechendes Vorwissen wohl eher nicht zu verstehen. Man sollte schon im Studium ein wenig von der Materie gehört haben. Ich habe es jedenfalls genossen, vieles, was in meinem Physikstudium trocken und unmotiviert rübergekommen ist, nochmal sehr anschaulich beschrieben zu bekommen (gerade Funktionentheorie kann man sehr anschaulich erklären). Penrose Hinweis, bei Mathematiklöchern des Lesers einfach über die Formeln zu lesen, muß man wohl mit seiner Genialität entschuldigen. Ein normal Sterblicher wird bei der Formeldichte und den Abhängigkeiten zwischen den Formeln arg ins schleudern geraten. Aber dieses Buch ist bisher "das einzige" populärwissenschaftliche mathematische Physikbuch, das bis an die derzeitigen Wissensgrenzen stößt. Populärwissenschaftlich ist auch der falsche Ausdruck. Es ist eher ein neues Genre, das Penrose generiert hat: mathematisch korrekt und in aller nötiger Tiefe und doch an den aktuellen Fragen dran. Wer ernsthaft an der vordersten Front mitdenken will (Strings, Loops, etc.), aber nicht 10 Jahre Zeit hat, sich bis dort in aller Gründlichkeit hinzukämpfen, dem bietet dieses Buch die Gelegenheit in einer Art Schnelldurchlauf auch mathematisch zu folgen. Populärwissenschaftliche Bücher über die moderne Physik gibt es ja mittlerweile häufiger als Sonnenaufgänge und manchmal hat man den Eindruck, dass der Autor die dahinterliegende Mathematik selbst nicht verstanden hat und sein Thema bei irgendeinem anderen populärwissenschaftlichen Autor abgeschrieben hat. Das kann einem beim unkonventionellen Penrose nicht passieren. Resume: Für eine bestimmte Klientel stark empfehlenswert. Für jemanden, der noch nichts von Riemannscher Zahlenkugel, Residuen, Fouriertransformierten und 1-Formen gehört hat, ist es keine Schande auf der Hälfte des Weges stecken zu bleiben; aber vielleicht reicht ja schon diese erste Hälfte für viele Aha-Erfahrungen. Es ist ein Buch, das man auf eine einsame Insel mitnehmen möchte oder vor einer Naturkatastrophe retten möchte.

The 4th edition is much better than the 3rd mainly due to its readability (the color is nice too). The ease of use and understandability is still not up to the level of Nelson and Cox\'s "Lehninger." MBC does cover more basics than the Lehninger, but it is less intuitive and more diffucult to read.
+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): One of my absolute favorite textbooks...
In graduate school for Neuroscience I had to take a class on molecular biology and biochemistry which was required of all med students whether Ph.D. or M.D. or both. We had five different teachers in the class, three of whom were foreign. Since I was the first Deaf person to take Neuroscience there, they weren\'t prepared for me...and I ended up taking the class without interpreters! I had to lipread the teachers. If it hadn\'t been for this particular textbook, I would never had made it through! I am not kidding anyone by saying this. YOu can take a class with just this textbook for information and still pass with flying colors. That is how well this text is written. For once, the book was written with the student in mind, not the peers of the authors. It was written to teach the same information that the authors had in such a way as to make it understandable. Not only did I use this text in this class but in most of my classes at med school. When I started working on HIV encephalitis in my chosen lab for two years, I was not surprised to find this book on the shelves...and we all referred to it constantly. I applaud the authors for a job well done, and if I ever write a textbook, this will be the one I use to follow as an appropriate way to write curriculum. Most people, when commenting about this book, tend to compare it to Lodish\'s Molecular Cell Biology. I own both, and I must say that they are quite similar in their content but different in the way of explaining concepts. Although Lodish\'s book is a little more up-to-date, it\'s just a matter of time until a new edition of MBoC is published. In fact, a great number of concepts are clearer in Molecular Biology of the Cell... and vice-versa. About the book, it is the authoritative text of molecular biology for beginners and a reference guide to all fields of cell biology. The chapters concerning the structure of the cell and of the organelles are amazing and include in-depth explanations. It also comprehends the best revision chapters on macromolecules compared to Lodish\'s. The team of authors was accurate to compose one of the best books in molecular biology for students of all biological and biomedical sciences.

+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Klasse!!
Ich bin gerade mal ungefähr beim ersten Drittel des Buches angelangt, aber der Kauf hat sich jetzt schon gelohnt. Das Problem mit Rätselbüchern ist im wesentlichen der Schwierigkeitsgrad, was für manche eine Fingerübung ist, ist für andere ein echtes Problem (ich gehöre wohl eher zu den letzteren:-) ). Ich glaube, ohne es ernsthaft begründen zu können, dass die Aufgabenstellungen das Prädikat:"pädagogisch Wertvoll" verdienen. Ich fand die Aufgabenstellungen bisher spannend und anregend. Die Lösungen sind ausführlich und gut verständlich. Fazit: Ein netter und intilligenter Zeitvertreib. Die fünf Sterne sind meine persönliche Einschätzung. Also bitte nicht entäuscht sein, wenn Sie den Schwierigkeitsgrad dann zu leicht finden. Für mich eine perfekte Ergänzung zu Die Hühnchen von Minsk: Und 99 andere hübsche Probleme. Gruss

Excellent selection of problems and very explanatory and detailed solutions. This gets to the ideas behind many of the popular methods in probability, like maximum likelihood. The concepts are given centerstage and provide insights on "how to think" about many problems in probability.

This book actually has 56 great problems in probability as well as very detailed solutions. Most (if not all) do *not* require advanced mathematics but do require some clever thinking. A lot of these problems could be tackled by high school students and some of these problems will make PhDs blush!

The concept of \'quantization\' has acquired multiple meanings in mathematical physics, since the foundation of quantum mechanics in the 1920ties. I refer to the papers of Heisenberg, Schrodinger, and Dirac which made precise the variables: states, observables, probabilities, the uncertainty principle, dual variables, and the equations of motion. This was also when the wave-particle question received a more precise mathematical formulation, and resolution. Perhaps best known are the equation of Schrodinger, giving the dynamics of systems of quantum mechanical particles, and Dirac\'s equation for the electron. All three of the pioneers won the Nobel Prize at a young age;-- Schrodinger was a little older than the other two (Heisenberg and Dirac were both born in 1902.) In 1932, John von Neumann showed, surprisingly at the time, that Schrodinger\'s formulation is equivalent to Heisenbergs matrix mechanics, and von Neumann turned quantization into a field of mathematics. Von Neumann was a contemporary, but trained in mathemetics. His 1932 book "Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics" was reprinted by Princeton University Press in 1996. Occasionally the link to the foundations of physics have been missed: Reed and Simon quote Edward Nelson: "First quantization is a mystery, and second quantization is a functor." Dirac\'s lovely little book represents a set of lectures Dirac gave in 1964 at Yeshiva University, at a time when the great master could take advantage of hindsight. The Dover edition didn\'t appear until 2001. The clarity of Dirac\'s presentation is truely compelling (no mystery at all!). Very little background is required on the part of the reader. Dirac begins with the Hamilonian method, and then passes to quantization in terms of physics. The mathematics of quantization on curved (and flat) surfaces is clearly presented in the second part of the book. Dirac\'s ansatz for relativistic theory is Lorentz invariance, and the equations of motion arise naturally as extensions of the \'classical\' theory. The Lorentz-invariant action integrals are central, and Dirac covers the Born-Infeld electrodynamics in the last chapter. In total the book is only 87 pages, but Dirac is the master of effective and consise exposition. He also firmly believed that, as a rule, the beauty of the mathematics involved is a good indication that the equation is right for physics. Readers who enjoy popular books by the pioneers in science might like to check out Schrodinger\'s "What is Life?" reprinted by Cambridge University Press 2002, with a Preface written by Roger Penrose, and a lovely set of biographical sketches, written by Schrodinger, and translated by his granddaughter Verena. dieses buch unbedingt kaufen ! den möchte ich sehen, der dieses buch schlecht findet oder daraus nichts gelernt hat ! anbei habe ich bisher auch noch nirgends auch nur eine schlechte kritik darüber gelesen ! und noch etwas: es wird nicht umsonst damit geworben, dass es in einfachen worten geschrieben ist. trotzdem ist dieses buch nichts für menschen mit arg schlechten englischkenntnissen. sollte jemand nur nicht so ganz sattelfest in englisch sein, keine angst haben! wenn es wirklich mal eine unklarheit beispielsweise bezüglich kontext gibt und man nachschauen muss um ihn zu begreifen, vertieft man über seine englischfähigkeiten hinaus sein audio verständnis. also, nimm2

Zum Glück gibt es keine deutsche Version dieses Buches, die Übersetzung wäre wahrscheinlich fatal, das das Vokabular vor (erklärten!) Fachausdrücken nur so strotzt. Allerdings sollte es für jeden Engineer Pflichtlektüre werden - egal, ob Mix oder Mastering. Im Musikbusiness sollte man schon genug Englisch können, um da durchzukommen... Wenn ich denke, wieviel Lektüre ich allein zum Thema Kompression verschlungen und nicht wirklich 100% verstanden habe. 1 Kapitel von Mr.Katz hat alles ausgeräumt. SO stelle ich mir das vor! Zudem wird fast alles technisch/wissenschaftlich untermauert, sodass man es wirklich verstehen KANN, wenn man will. Jedenfalls wird mein Altpapier demnächst sehr schwer werden, wenn ich sämtliche bhv- etc. Schinken wegschmeißen kann... Sehr empfehlenswert!

Bob Katz ist in der Szene ein Begriff & dies ist das Nachschlage Werk schlechthin. Das einzige was ich schade finde ist das es das Buch nicht als Deutsche Übersetzung gibt. This is easily the best book I have encountered on the subject of audio! Many books are useful, but they never get under-the-hood the same way that this book does. It is quite technical, which suits a person (like me) who wants to know everything, and won\'t settle for a mumbo-jumbo explaination. Even if you are not a mastering engineer (which I am not, and I don\'t intend to become one) this book is extremely valuable. It has taught me so much about what good audio is all about. Bob Katz leavs no stone unturned. Especially, I was very pleased reading the chapters on jitter and high sample rates. I know it\'s a cliché, but if you read one book on audio in this life - make it this one!

Very Impressed Mr. Katz,... I came across Mr. Katz some years ago, when I read the mastering pamphlet for TC Electronics Finalizer, and now he finally wrote a book. I\'m diggin\' around to find a good book covering the topic of "mastering" ( actually "premastering", 4 the term "mastering" actually refers to the creation of glass masters etc., though I\'ll use it anyway 4 better understanding) since ages. All other books are really obsolete now,... Bob Katz actually covers all aspects and related topics of "mastering" from the only reasonable perspective,... not as a gearhead but as an audiophile person with an incredible experience. It\'s not only usefull for experienced readers, but also a perfect starting point to get the into the domain of good sound quality,...Loads of useful charts and a big unfoldable version of the Carnegie Hall Music Chart. The Layout is very good and makes this a very readable Book. When I got it last week,...I read it in one go !!!! Get this one & "The Mixing Engineers Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski and you can\'t say you didn\'t know it any better anymore !!!!!!

i must say that this is one of the most interesting books i\'ve ever read. it is a must for teachers of mathematics and the sciences. polya exposes with an unmatched wit and cunning the art of breaking it down and analyzing parts of parts in order to arrive at a reliable and justifiable solution. polya is the quintessential teacher and this teacher finds his writings both compelling as well as inspiring. this is NOT the last book by this great mathematician that i plan to read. a word of advice for teachers: read it and REREAD it until you get the point. the teaching of mathematics is not a mere monkey-see-monkey-do regurgitation process. rather, it is the art of conveying to the student the problem-solving process. once the student has mastered this talent, the sky\'s the limit. and speaking of limits, the sky may just be a gross underexaggeration. LOVE IT! got to say again, "BUY THE BOOK!" and this goes doubly for TEACHERS!

In fact, do you want to be a robot? I talked to a woman who took a whole semester in computer science and came out learning nothing. She told me this. My love affair with Real Math started with this book in a library. I was reading a book which had a bunch of interviews with the most successful programmers in the world. One was Czech and I do not remember his name. But he was asked the following question. "What in your opinion is the biggest mistake that programmers are doing in their educations or their work today?" He answered, "It\'s simple. They don\'t know how to solve problems. At our company, we have some simple books that tell you how to do this. The best is Polya\'s \'How to Solve It\'. It has a little diagram in the back that completely runs you through a series of questions on solving math problems. But even in schools, they don\'t take this approach. Everything is by rote and repetition! You solve a problem and YOU DON\'T KNOW WHAT YOU SOLVED! We have a lot of these little books." The late Isaac Asimov wrote a beautiful little book called "The Realm of Algebra". It\'s out of print. But he explains the entire realm of algebra in something like 150 pages. The best book I\'ve ever seen about math. Math can be fun. Programming can be fun. But only if you ask Polya\'s questions in the back of this book. "What do I have to do to make this problem complete?" "What is missing from this problem?" "What could I add to make this problem solved?" A two page diagram in the back. And everybody knows that programming is just "crummy mathematics". BUY THE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK!. 2 pages in the end of this book and at least 50% of your math/programming problems are down the drain. Buy the books for your son if you are a Betty Crocker. Or your daughter. Or they will end up in the "Valley of the Dead". Solving problems in school for years and years and simply not knowing what they did! Good luck. Oh yes. One last thing. BUY THE BOOK!

Polya\'s brilliante Anleitung zum Lösen mathematischer Probleme vermittelt auch dem Laien ein überaus stimmiges und nützliches Bild vom täglichen Brot des Mathematikers. Gerade indem sie keine unfehlbare Beweismethode liefert, die einfach ohne kreativ nachdenken zu müssen nur abgearbeitet werden muss, sondern den intuitiven Aspekt mathematischen Denkens betont, vermittelt sie viel von der Schönheit eleganter Lösungen. Anders als beispielsweise ein Ingenieur ist der Mathematiker nicht zufrieden, sobald ein bestimmtes Problem irgendwie gelöst ist, sondern meist beginnt hier erst der interessante Teil der Arbeit: Kann die Lösung noch vereinfacht werden oder gar bei der Lösung anderer, verwandter Probleme helfen? Oft werden ganze Zweige der Mathematik geschaffen, um ein bestimmtes Problem wie z.B. die kürzlich bewiesene Fermat\'sche Vermutung anzugehen. Polya\'s Büchlein hat auch ganz konkreten Nutzen: Wer seinen Kindern, Schülern oder Studenten einfache oder schwere Mathematik beibringen will, tut gut daran, sich mit Polya in den Prozess der Lösungsfindung einzufühlen statt fertige Lösungen zu präsentieren. This is a really good book about how to teach and how to think about problems that need to be solved with paper and pencil. Of course, it doesn\'t treat the way we handle problems today with computers. But it\'s still a classic book.

With the many recent advances in technology, it seems, there has followed a diminution of quality. Electronic books have several advantages over their print counterparts, for instance. But for the time being, they're hard to use and unattractive to boot. Computers, which are supposed to make our lives easier, are commonly sources of frustration and wasted time. Movies are wondrously chock-a-block with special effects--but someone forgot the story. And so on. Donald Norman, a retired professor of cognitive science, is bothered to no end by the fact that grappling with unfriendly objects now takes up so many of our hours. Over the course of several books, of which The Psychology of Everyday Things was the first, he has railed against bad design. He scrutinizes a range of artifacts that are supposed to make our daily living a little easier, and he finds most of them wanting. Why, he asks, does a door need instructions that say "push" or "pull"? A well-designed object, he argues, is self-explanatory. But well-designed objects are increasingly rare, for the present culture places a higher value on aesthetics than utility, even with such items as cordless screwdrivers, dresser drawers, and kitchen cabinets. In their concern for creating "art," many designers don't seem to consider what people actually do with things. Such disregard, Norman suggests, leads to few objects being standardized: think of all the different kinds of unsynchronized clocks that lurk in microwave ovens, VCRs, coffee makers, and the like--and of all the different kinds of batteries needed to drive them. Why, he wonders, must we reset all those clocks whenever the power goes off? Some designer somewhere, he ventures, ought to develop a master clock that communicates with all other electric clocks in a home--one that, when reset, synchronizes its slave units. You don't need to be especially interested in technological matters to enjoy Norman's arguments. The book's underlying question is aimed at a global audience: will the design of everyday things improve? ++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Nice Argument for Usability, But Misses the Application
"The Design of Everyday Things" by Donald A. Norman is said to be one of those great usability books. I bought mine at a major usability conference, believing the hype. My conclusion: Useful, but overhyped. Norman takes a theme that says, "Look at history and you will see how the objects we use daily are sensible and functional. Now, design websites and software likewise," and develops a complete book. Rats. I gave it all away. Now you do not need to buy the book, nor read any its 257 pages. Really, that\'s more or less all there is to the book. It is easy to read, but, in the end, becomes repetitive and is deficient in assisting the reader with application. It points out a problem we need to understand, but offers no solution. It is worth reading, but lacks as an instructional tool. For the dense-headed, or for someone who has never considered the arguments for thinking about function before form, the book is tremendously useful. Example after example is presented is simple terms so that readers will see that merely having a cool website is not enough. Where the book does not meet the mark is in the transferring the ideas into something modern, practical, and, in the case of we communications people, websites. Die ersten 60 Seiten sind für jeden - wirklich jeden - äußerst witzig und lehrreich zu lesen. Norman stellt zahlreiche Beispiele vor, mit denen es Probleme gab, die es scheinbar nicht geben sollte. Beispielsweise Türen und Telefonanlagen. Wer hat Probleme, durch eine Tür zu treten? Anscheinend sehr viel mehr Personen als man meint. Nach diesem witzigen Einstieg, der aber auch nicht mehr allzu aktuell ist, geht es dann ins Eingemachte und wird entsprechend schwerfälliger. Er wird zwar noch immer regelmäßig für seine Ideen zitiert, ich würde aber dennoch andere und aktuellere Bücher empfehlen, will man Richtlinien der Benutzerschnittstellen-Entwicklung kennenlernen. Norman noch immer als das Maß der Dinge zu nehmen ist in etwa so, als würde ich behaupten, dass es außer dem "Wasserfall-Prinzip" nichts Gleichwertiges - oder gar Besseres - in der Softwareentwicklung gibt. Also am besten sich die ersten Seiten durchlesen und amüsieren, dann andere Bücher zur Hand nehmen. Übrigens hat D. Norman auch aktuellere Bücher verfasst...

Norman erzählt in "The Design of Everyday Things" eindrucksvoll und humorvoll so manche Tücken modernen Designs. Telefonanlagen bekommen ebenso ihr Fett weg wie Wasserhähne und ähnliche "einfachen" Dinge des altläglichen Lebens. Die zahlreichen heiteren Anekdoten runden die theoretischen Ausführungen ab, und demonstrieren die behandelten Designschwächen amüsant und anschaulich. Dieses Buch ist nicht nur jenen zu empfehlen, die bereits an "award-winning" designten Türen, Wasserhähnen, etc. verzweifelt sind.

"The Design of Everyday Things" ist eine gelungene Mischung aus fundierter kognitiver Psychologie und praktischer Alltagserfahrung. Wie gut kann man Norman\'s humorvoll beschriebenen Frust nachvollziehen, wenn er die Tücken der Telefonanlage in seinem Büro beschreibt! Das Buch ist gespickt mit Anekdoten und Erlebnissen aus seiner Erfahrung, die er anschliessend theoretisch erläutert. Well done! Norman ist ein leidenschaftlicher Anwalt für das Pragmatische und Einfache. In Verbindung mit seinem Fachwissen eine erfrischende und lehrreiche Mischung, die sich auch in seinen anderen bekannten Werken niederschlägt (etwa: "Turn signals are the facial expression of automobiles","Things that make us smart","The invisible computer"). Für alle Usability-Freaks, Interface-Designer und HCI-Psychologen als Grundlagenwerk unbedingt zu empfehlen!
+++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Strong point, but missing the main ingredient...
This book is a very good waterdown introduction to the issues most designers have to deal with when developing a project. All types of designers should read this book. It is very helpful because even though Mr. Norman often focuses on industrial products, the information he discusses is pivotal to the success of any product during its design stage. This applies to web designers as much as to industrial designers. I was a little disappointed to read reviews about this book from web designers saying that it was not necessarily helpful because it did not talk directly about web design. The reader should be more open and apply the concepts to their specific design field. Now, there is a major flaw that I need to note about the book. This one deals with the practical issues behind a design, such as the pressure to show a unique interpretation that might win a prize and at the same time be a best seller with consumers. But the book does not deal with the issues behind desire -- the fact that people often buy things which are not usefull to them but are bought to fulfill their undefined desires. The book does not address this aspect of consumerism at all. All designers need to understand desire as much as possible. Mr. Norman merely mentioned it in the last two paragraphs of his final chapter. And it was in the passing; something which could be missed by someone who is not familiar with that topic in relation to design. Be aware of that. I do recommend this book to be read. But it would be a very different book if he explored the fact that designers are not only pushed to develop something useful for the consumer, but are also pushed to create myth and desire which will keep the consumer coming back for more things which are not necessary to everyday life. be aware of this, big, big, big boooooo boooo by Mr. Norman.

Just as we trace our personal family trees from parents to grandparents and so on back in time, so in The Ancestor's Tale Richard Dawkins traces the ancestry of life. As he is at pains to point out, this is very much our human tale, our ancestry. Surprisingly, it is one that many otherwise literate people are largely unaware of. Hopefully Dawkins's name and well deserved reputation as a best selling writer will introduce them to this wonderful saga. The Ancestor's Tale takes us from our immediate human ancestors back through what he calls `concestors,' those shared with the apes, monkeys and other mammals and other vertebrates and beyond to the dim and distant microbial beginnings of life some 4 billion years ago. It is a remarkable story which is still very much in the process of being uncovered. And, of course from a scientist of Dawkins stature and reputation we get an insider's knowledge of the most up-to-date science and many of those involved in the research. And, as we have come to expect of Dawkins, it is told with a passionate commitment to scientific veracity and a nose for a good story. Dawkins's knowledge of the vast and wonderful sweep of life's diversity is admirable. Not only does it encompass the most interesting living representatives of so many groups of organisms but also the important and informative fossil ones, many of which have only been found in recent years. Dawkins sees his journey with its reverse chronology as `cast in the form of an epic pilgrimage from the present to the past [and] all roads lead to the origin of life.' It is, to my mind, a sensible and perfectly acceptable approach although some might complain about going against the grain of evolution. The great benefit for the general reader is that it begins with the more familiar present and the animals nearest and dearest to us—our immediate human ancestors. And then it delves back into the more remote and less familiar past with its droves of lesser known and extinct fossil forms. The whole pilgrimage is divided into 40 tales, each based around a group of organisms and discusses their role in the overall story. Genetic, morphological and fossil evidence is all taken into account and illustrated with a wealth of photos and drawings of living and fossils forms, evolutionary and distributional charts and maps through time, providing a visual compliment and complement to the text. A magnum opus from a scientist isn\'t common these days. Usually, their writings are in stacks of journal papers, with the occasional monograph highlighting a career. Journal articles remain buried in academic libraries, down the aisle from dusty tomes. Dawkins, however, is charged with the task of improving the "public understanding of science". With such a mandate, he is free to indulge in some innovative techniques. In this epic journey through time, he accomplishes that with his usual finesse. Add the lavish illustrations enhancing the text, and you have an outstanding depiction of evolution\'s saga. Unlike most general surveys of evolution, this one offers some novel approaches. First, of course, is its structure. Instead of vague beginnings, Dawkins opens with a period familiar to all his readers - the scenes around us today. Moreover, that focus is on the part of Nature of most concern to us - "All Humankind". We like to consider ourselves the "point" of evolution? So be it, Dawkins declares, but warns that a change in outlook will likely result as you read this book. From that point, he begins to work backward in time. He stands Chaucer on his head by adding "pilgrims" to our journey at certain waypoints. The "pilgrims" are the Most Recent Common Ancestor of the present population of creatures. Since he begins with Homo sapiens, the most recent common ancestor, which Dawkins [rather, one of his graduate assistants] deems a "concestor", is of course the ancestor of today\'s chimpanzee. It is a shock to most readers to learn we can make the traverse of nearly 4 billion years in but 39 steps [Hitchcock would have loved it!]. In tracing our mammalian ancestry, Dawkins is able to aid us in peering at the innermost secrets of our bizarre relatives. We meet colugos and tree shrews, mammoths with tusks like shovels, tarsiers and tigers. Nearly halfway along the track we are confronted with a superb essay on our nervous system. Using recent studies of the Platypus, we learn how our brain interacts with the rest of our bodies. A model human, proportioned to show how much our limbs are represented in the brain confronts us. Huge hands and lips extend from a minuscule torso perched on spindly legs. Our grasping abilities clearly helped drive the enlargement of that organ taking so much of our body\'s resources. In Platypus\' case, the lips play the major role, since this creature uses its unusual properties to investigate its environment. As we progress along the path, the information about our ancestors grows less certain. Is this creature in the proper genus? Is this miniature swimmer indeed unique in its classification? What is the divergent point between mammals and reptiles? With the introduction of reptiles, the birds finally join the trek. Dinosaurs, not being in the direct line leading to humans, are given short shrift. No matter, the books on these long-successful creatures are beyond counting - and the number grows constantly. Further back, he is able to introduce the unicellular world. It gives him an opportunity to explain the lifestyle of some of our planet\'s most fascinating life forms. Hair-trigger cells that capture food prey or ward off predators. Glorious, worm-like creatures "too good for a goddess", despite their human-derived appellation. In his educational role, Dawkins must confront the insidious spread of Christian-inspired simplistic hype over evolution. He must take up space refuting its propaganda and invalid assumptions. With so much to cover, this is an unfortunate aside. Yet in dealing with their rants about "irreducible complexity", Dawkins demonstrates yet again that Darwinian principles provide the mechanisms for all life. The energy nodes in our cells, the mitochondria, he reminds us, are the vestiges of bacterial invaders, co-opted to a new role. Flagella, the great bugaboo of "intelligent design" adherents, are simply another chemical process. In his concluding way stations, Dawkins shows how these elements originally lived. Although Dawkins notes throughout the book that science has a formidable task still ahead, with many mysteries to be resolved, this book will long endure. Das Buch ist sehr umfangreich und didaktisch sehr gelungen. Die Strukturformeln sind so wie sie in einem Lehrbuch für organische Chemie sein sollten. Die logische Verwendung von Farben in den Strukturformeln verschaffen Übersicht und machen jede noch so komplizierte Reaktion schnell verständlich. Der englische Text lässt sich auch mit mittelmäßigen Englischkenntnissen sehr gut lesen und vermittelt nicht nur bloßes Wissen, sondern auch Verständnis. Am Ende jedes Kapitels finden sich Übungsaufgaben - die Lösungen allerdings muss man im Lösungsbuch nachschlagen. Trotz der geballen 1500 Seiten sind einige wichtige Namensreaktionen im "Clayden" nicht zu finden. Deswegen empfiehlt es sich, daneben auch ein gutes Nachschlagewerk für Namensreaktionen zur Hand zu haben (z.B. Laue-Plagens). Außerdem sind einige Grundlagen des ersten Semesters anderswo besser erklärt (z.B. im Vollhard). Fazit: Absolute Kaufempfehlung für Chemiestudenten im Grundstudium und danach!

Es gibt eine Menge OC-Bücher; das richtige zu finden nicht immer ganz einfach. Da ich ihm Rahmen meines Grundstudiums doch einiges mit Chemie zu tun hatte habe ich mit verschiedenen Büchern gelernt und gearbeitet (Vollhardt, Bruice, Wollrab ... ), aber dieses hier ist und bleibt mein Favorit. Der Inhalt ist didaktisch sehr sinnvoll aufgearbeitet. Hier wird man nicht mit Fakten überhäuft sondern mit wirklich gut verständlicher Erklärung zum Verstehen animiert. So muss man Chemie nicht auswendig lernen, sondern weiss hinterher wirklich warum bestimmte Reaktionen passieren und andere nicht. Wenn ein Detail wichtig ist, wird es auch, obwohl es schon besprochen wurde nochma in wenigen Worten erklärt oder ein Querverweis gegeben. So muss man das Buch nicht wirklich konsequent durcharbeiten sondern kann auch quer in ein Kapitel einsteigen. Zu Beginn jedes Kapitels wird aufgelistet welche vorangegangenen Kapitel zum Verständnis wichtig sind ... so lassen sich mögliche Defizite sofort aufarbeiten. Die Fähigkeiten der Autoren Sachverhalte klar darzustellen ist enorm; vor allem schaffen sie es dabei nicht oberflächlich zu werden. Ein Beispiel: Im meinem Chemiepraktikum kam eine Aldolkondensation mit E1cB-Elimierung vor. Bei Paula Yurkanis Bruice und im Vollhardt blieben meine Recherchen ziemlich Ergebnislos wohingegen ich im Clayden Warren nach wenigen Minuten alles relevante für mich gefunden hatte und sofort verwenden konnte, da die Darstellung des Reaktionsablaufs sofort einsichtig war. Vermutlich lassen sich viele potenzielle Käufer des Buchs dadurch abschrecken, dass es sich um ein englisches Lehrwerk handelt, aber ich bin der Meinung, dass jeder, der in der Oberstufe Englischunterricht hatte in der Lage ist, die Texte ohne Mühe zu verstehen. Locken tut das wirklich hervorragende Preis/Leistungs-Verhältnis ... ich glaube das waren die bestinvestierten 50¬ meines Studiums. Einzig und allein der Einsatz von Skelettformeln, an den ich nun ganz und gar nicht gewöhnt war erschwerte mir zu Beginn etwas das Verständnis, aber mit etwa Übung stellt auch das kein Problem dar.

Clayden takes the dryest material imaginable, chemistry!, and makes it somewhat interesting. Now "somewhat interesting" may not seem like a hearty endorsement. But you must realize I am not a fan of chemistry! I\'d rather read the classics, or sports or humor, or even a romance! But I made it all the way through this book and am glad for that. It\'s an excellent book on chemistry and if the asubject at all interests you, you should love this. Oh, and by the way - L learned something, too.

Mehr kann ich nicht sagen. Dieses Lehrbuch ist für Anfänger, Fortgeschrittene und Profis der Organischen Chemie gleichermaßen geeignet. Absolute Weltklasse.

Ich kann mich den unten stehenden Rezensionen nur anschließen. Wie ich auf das OC-Vordiplom gelernt habe, habe ich hauptsächlich aus dem Warren gelernt (+ Streitwieser), das Buch ist didaktisch klasse und macht Spass zu lesen. Keine Angst vor dem Englisch, das Buch ist einfacher zu lesen als manches deutschsprachiges Buch.
