I thought this was one of the best books ever written. It is completely fascinating throughout. The reason I read it is because I love David Niven who used to share a house with Flynn. After reading it I became a big Errol Flynn fan, and bought loads of his old films. I also recommend The Moon\'s A Balloon (the best ever autobiography) & Bring On The Empty Horses by David Niven which are fantastic and talk about some of the same people in Hollywood.

with all the underhanded efforts by some to tear down this historic figure it is fascinating to read flynns spin on his life. no doubt a stretch for the average joe to comprehend. however, his was a life unlike any prior or since. a compelling read and a must for anyone seeking the story from the man himself. a tragic story of a man who lived as others only dream.

This is the kind of book you wish you could find every time you went hunting for knowledge.

This is an excellent book on classical film directing. The storyboards it includes from North By Northwest and The Battleship Potemkin, among others, are inspirational. It breaks down the classical shooting style in a fashion that is simple and clean...maybe at times a little too simple. Nonetheless, I\'ll keep it in my library forever!

When I entered college to recieve a bachelor\'s degree, I wasn\'t quite sure what I wanted to do. I ended up choosing a degree in acting, but have since wondered if that was the wrong choice. In the last year of college, I became interested in film direction, but felt it was to late to pursue that career. Mr. Katz\'s book has changed my mind. In less than one week, I learned more about the technique of film direction than I ever learned in numerous film, and television classes. This book was easy to read, yet not easy in subject matter. It challenges the reader to visualize the subject matter, and to work out common problems in his/her head. It uses an extensive study of soryboarding from both classic and fictional films to easily illustrate his technique. Although Mr Katz uses a pretty set theory of film mechanics, he does challenge the reader to experiment and to create new and exciting art. This book is a must for beginners in the film industry, and I have a hunch that advanced artists could learn a lot from it too.

I think the most positive thing about this book is Jane Fonda\'s revelation that she, like so many women of her generation, has forever been entrenched in the classic father-daughter drama: "All my life I had been a father\'s daughter, trapped in a Greek drama, like Athena, who sprang fully formed from the head of her father, Zeus - disciplined, driven." She admits to spending her lifetime swimming in the slipstreams of men - first siding as a child with her famous dad (the back flap has a picture of her intently gazing at him whilst he looks away), following him into the acting business, then taking shelter in a series of marriages with powerful, awe-inspiring men. In each relationship she seemed to take on a new self, engaging in threesomes with prostitutes to please French director Roger Vadim, morphing into a political fundraiser for Democrat Tom Hayden and becoming a careerless, corporate wife with breast implants for media mogul and ex-Republican Ted Turner. This is what she diagnoses as "the disease to please", which leads women to dissociate their heads from their bodies and to subjugate themselves to oppression so as to retain the love of their men. But just when you think a clear feminist narrative and a whole, integrated identity are managing to emerge, Fonda goes and throws herself down at the altar of the fathers of patriarchy in the third act of her life and embraces Christianity, whilst simultaneously preaching of the importance of "leaving the father\'s house". This is just one of many paradoxes to Jane Fonda. She seems to have spent most of her life richocheting between radical poles of behaviour like a true chameleon: fitness queen in lycra with a huge empire (17 million videos sold! They\'re coming out on DVD soon!) and engaged feminist; protesting against the Vietnam war whilst remaining pro-soldier and expressing patriotic sentiments about her country; dropping the politics after the war to return to the Hollywood industry, and so on. For me, her autobiography became a pull between empathy and irritation: just as she starts to annoy with her narcissistic obsession with herself and naivity, she then manages to undersell her acting achievements. There are in fact many moments of profound sadness: the violent suicide of her mother when she was 12, her frustrated relationship to her father, the eating disorders and Dexedrine dependency, and the emotional impotence of her husbands. Through all this she remains generous and honest. That\'s what stands out at the end of the near-600 pages of her book: the exuberant force of her candour but also the crucial importance of practising and integrating what you preach to embody an authentic and centred identity and move into a freer, more conscious life.

Ein wirklich dicker Schmöker, der einem Einblicke hinter die Kulissen der Zeichner gibt. Das Buch erklärt nicht nur Schritt für Schritt wie "einfache Striche" zu Charakteren werden sondern ist auch voll mit Skizzen, Fotos und jeder Menge Details. Man erfährt, wie viel Spaß die Macher der Filme stellenweise hatten, wenn sie Geräusche oder Stimmen nachgestellt haben, aber auch über den steinigen Weg, den Disney und seine Crew zu gehen hatten. Besonders anschaulich ist der Teil, in dem beschrieben wird, wie man sich die Bewegungen und Ausdrucksformen bei den Tieren abgeschaut hat, um den eigenen Zeichnungen Leben einzuhauchen. Dieses Buch beschreibt eindrucksvoll, wie viel Arbeit in so einem Trickfilm steckt und das zu einer Zeit, wo noch niemand an Computeranimation dachte. Fazit: Ein Buch, das man eigentlich noch verfilmen sollte. Das Thema dürfte alle Freunde des Trickfilms interessieren.

Ich besitze dieses wunderbare Werk seit 1989 - seither war es immer ein Quelle der Inspiration für mich (ich habe viele Jahre als Illustrator und Animator gearbeitet). Frank Thomas und Ollie Johnston gehören zu den großen, alten Meistern des handgemachten Animationsfilms (beide Jahrgang 1912) und wer sich für dieses Kunstform interessiert - egal ob Fan, Hobby-Animator oder Profi - kann hier Techniken, Tipps und Tricks, Historisches und Unterhaltsames direkt aus der Disney-Küche finden. Schon allein die Model-Sheets sind die Investition wert! Fünf Sterne sind definitiv zu wenig! Uneingeschränkt empfehlenswert!

This book is a must. I am a teacher at Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria, and this book is one of the texts I use. I recommend it everywhere. It is easy to understand and comprehensive for all levels. I mean, it is useful for the beginners and also for graduate students. Maybe it needs a spanish translation. It is unfair that for most of my students the book is hard to read because of the language.

Sehr lesenswert auch für jene, die sich ganz allgemein für Film interessieren und nicht unbedingt ihren eigenen Film zu produzieren planen. Vielen Tips, Ideen und Ratschläge lassen sich sogar auf andere Projekte als Filmprojekte übertragen. Das Buch gibt einen Einblick über das soziale Gefüge und die wirtschaftlichen Grundlagen der Filmproduktion in den Vereinigten Staaten und nur dort. Die besondere Situation in Europa und insbesondere Deutschland mit hauptsächlich staatlichen Filmhochschulen und Filmförderungsprogrammen ist den Autorinnen offenbar gänzlich unbekannt. Um so interessanter ist es, die Filmindustrie aus diesem amerikanischen, sehr viel stärker kommerziell orientierten Blickwinkel zu betrachten. Ach und fast hätte ich es vergessen: es liest sich mit viel Vergnügen. Die 161 Kapitelchen sind gespickt mit wahren oder erfundenen Geschichten und viel Humor.

Bestes Buch überhaupt, wenn es darum geht sich informieren, wie man den harten Alltag als Filmemacher übersteht, sich motiviert zu schreiben, den Umgang mit Darstellern, Hausbesitzern, Crew-Mitgliedern und allen die etwas mit dem Marketing-Prozess zu tun haben erfolgreich angeht. Am Rande wird auch auf technische Aspekte des Filmschaffens eingegangen, hauptsächlich wie man die Produktion verbilligt, aber nicht mit der Tiefe eines Lehrbuchs. Die Tipps werden mit garniert mit Humor und anschaulichen Beispielen vermittelt. Negativ fiel mir nur auf, dass die Autoren denken es gäbe keine Filmindustrie außerhalb Amerikas...(aber genau das werden wir Ihnen ja beweißen nachdem wir sie mit den Tipps schlagen, die sie uns in ihrem Buch vermitteln)

Dieses Buch gibt einem einen sehr tiefen und äußerst interessanten Einblick in diesen von vielen benannten Favoriten. Auch wenn man als Nicht-Fan mal in den Ablauf einer Filmproduktion hineinschnuppern will, so ist dies ein echtes Musterbeispiel, nicht zuletzt wegen des enormen Aufwandes (sechsstündige Verfilmung), der bei dem Film gemacht wurde. Fazit: Verständlich und interessant erklärt. Wird nicht langweilig, also genau so viel, wie man wissen will, aber nicht mehr, als man verstehen würde (als Laie). Wie gesagt, uneingeschränkt empfehlenswert!

...sollte sich unbedingt dieses Buch kaufen! Passend zur BBC Miniserie wird jede Seite der Vorbereitungen auf die Filmarbeiten beleuchtet - Casting, Kostüme, Maske, Suche nach passenden Locations, zeitgemäßen Möbeln und Inventar usw. Allmählich gewinnt man einen kleinen Eindruck davon, was es bedeutet solch aufwändige Dreharbeiten vorzubereiten und wie eintönig der Beruf eines Schauspielers wohl manchmal sein kann. Umso beeindruckender dann das Endprodukt! Großes Plus: Das Interview mit Colin Firth ist eine sehr nette Draufgabe!
+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Ein adäquater Begleiter zur BBC-Serie
Wer die Mini-Serie "Pride and Prejudice" von 1995 liebt, und wer tut das nicht, sollte sich dieses Begleitbuch unbedingt kaufen. Es ist eine wahre Fundgrube, und beantwortet jede Frage die man zu der Verfilmung nur haben kann. Jedes Kapitel widmet sich einem anderen Bereich der Herstellung dieses Welterfolgs. Vom Casting, über die Filmmusik, Kostüme, Ausstattung bis zum einem wunderbaren Interview mit "Mr.Darcy" Colin Firth. Jetzt ein spezieller Ratschlag:Zum 10. Jahrestag der Verfilmung erschien eine spezielle Edition: "10th Anniversary Limited Collector\'s Edition" mit 3 DVDs. Als großes Plus zur "Normal-Ausgabe" erachte ich, daß die verschiedenen Folgen nicht mehr durch Vor- und Abspann unterbrochen werden, sondern erstmals vollständig in einem "Rutsch" zu sehen sind, was einem das lästige "Vorspulen" erspart. Dazu gibt es eine neue Bonus-DVD mit einem Film "Lasting Impressions" in dem verschiedene Schauspieler, leider ohne Mitwirkung von Colin Firth und Jennifer Ehle, darunter u.a. Crispin Bonham-Carter (Mr.Bingley), Adrian Lukis (Mr. Wickham) und Alison Steadman (Mrs. Bennett) sich 10 Jahre später zu den Dreharbeiten äußern.Außerdem wird Produzentin Sue Birtwistle, die Autorin des Begleitbuches interviewt. Sehr interessant. Und das Buch "Making of Pride and Prejudice" ist in dem Schuber ebenfalls vorhanden. Ein absolutes Muß für jeden P&P-Fan. Ein Kauf der sich lohnt!
+++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Schönes Begleitbuch zur BBC-Verfilmung
Ein wahres Schatzkästchen für alle, die mehr zu den Hintergründen der BBC-Verfilmung von Pride and Prejudice erfahren möchten! Es besticht vor allem durch die vielen, vielen qualitativ hochwertigen Farbfotos: Szenen aus dem Film, aber auch viele Bilder von den Dreharbeiten, den Lokationen, der Ausstattung, der Schauspieler (während der Dreharbeiten). Auch an Infos wird nicht gespart. Sehr interessant z.B. zu erfahren, wie die Schauplätze ausgewählt wurden, was es mit der Musik auf sich hat, was man alles beachten muß, wenn man die Ausstattung einer solch opulenten Verfilmung organisieren muß. Auch wird gut erklärt, wer im Filmteam welche Aufgaben zu erledigen hat und welche Schwierigkeiten es beim Filmen gab. Absolut unglaublich, was alles an Arbeit in dieser Serie steckt, welche Recherchen in Museen und bei anerkannten Fachleuten gemacht wurden. Wahnsinn! Aber das Ergebnis kann sich schließlich auch sehen lassen. Es gibt ebenfalls eine Menge Infos zu den Kostümen, den Tänzen, den Proben, zum Casting, ja sogar zum Essen, das im Film verwendet wurde. Die Schauspieler selbst kommen auch mehr oder weniger ausführlich zu Wort. Lustig ist eine Seite, auf der die Akteure mit ihren "Alltagsgesichtern" abgebildet sind - ich hätte die wenigsten wiedererkannt... :-) Ein sehr ausführliches Interview mit Colin Firth zu seiner Rolle des Mr. Darcy (mit vielen Bildern...schwärm :) rundet das ganze ab und hilft sehr gut, seine Darstellung besser zu verstehen. Ausgestattet mit diesen ganzen Informationen macht es gleich nochmal so viel Spaß, diese tolle Serie anzuschauen...
++++ (ein Amazon Kunde): Gute Ergänzung zur BBC-Miniserie
Wer der BBC-Verfilmung von "Pride&Prejudice" aus dem Jahre 1995 verfallen ist, sollte sich dieses Buch zulegen. Zu erfahren gibt es viele interessante Details zu den Sets, zum Casting, Dreh usw. Es ist auch viel über allgemeine Filmarbeiten zu erfahren. 4 Sterne gibt es allerdings nur, weil das Buch für meinen Geschmack etwas zu kurz ausgefallen ist. Als Leser ist man zwar über ein Interview mit Hauptdarsteller Colin Firth hoch erfreut, sollte aber nicht auch Jennifer Ehle als Hauptdarstellerin zu Worte kommen? Insgesamt wirkt die Zahl der Interviews und Statements der Darsteller doch etwas spärlich. Schade, denn sie hätten bestimmt mehr zu berichten gehabt. Trotz allen, der Kauf lohnt sich.
